For many families of children with special needs, the world is full of barriers—physical, social, emotional, and invisible. A day at the beach can feel overwhelming. The ocean can seem impossible. But at Waves of Impact: Galveston Island, volunteers gather with one purpose: to create a safe, joyful, and unforgettable adaptive surfing experience for children and families who are too often left on the sidelines.

The Ripple Effect follows this community as volunteers prepare, families arrive, and participants step into the surf with courage, hesitation, excitement, and trust. Some children need extra time. Some need extra support. Some communicate differently. Some are ready to ride, while others simply need to feel safe near the water.

The volunteers do not force the moment. They create the conditions for it.

With patience, safety, encouragement, and genuine care, they help each participant experience the ocean in a way that fits that child’s needs. The result is more than a surf ride. It is a moment families remember. It is a reprieve for caregivers. It is a reminder that joy, adventure, and belonging are not reserved for typical children.

Directed by Rusty Baker and the HexaDoc Cohort of UNT’s MFA Documentary Program, The Ripple Effect is a joyful, human, service-focused documentary about what happens when ordinary people give their time to create extraordinary moments for others.

The film asks a simple question: What can one act of kindness set in motion?

Director’s Statement

As the father of a high-functioning autistic teenager, I understand how difficult it can be for a child with special needs to try something new. I also understand what it means for a parent to watch from the side, hoping someone else will see your child’s potential and meet them with patience instead of judgment.

That is what drew me to Waves of Impact.

This documentary is not about pity. It is not about disability as tragedy. It is about joy, service, courage, and connection. It is about volunteers who step into the water and help families experience something they may never have imagined possible.

My cousin Amy introduced me to Waves of Impact after her involvement with the organization in Boston. She truly sank the hook in me when she taught my own kids surfing fundamentals during a family vacation in 2022. From that moment, I understood there was a larger story here—one about how a single selfless act can change the way a family sees what is possible.

As a retired Marine Corps Sergeant Major, former combat photojournalist, disabled veteran, and returning MFA documentary student at the University of North Texas, I am drawn to stories of people who serve without needing recognition. The Ripple Effect is about those people. It is about the children they support, the families they lift, and the impact that continues long after the surfboards leave the water.

One drop can start a ripple. One ripple can change a life.

Project Description

The Ripple Effect is a short documentary currently in development, with production scheduled to begin in Fall 2026 on Galveston Island, Texas.

The film will document a Waves of Impact adaptive surf camp and follow the volunteers, families, and participants who make the event possible. Through cinematic beach imagery, intimate vérité moments, and emotionally grounded interviews, the film will explore the powerful relationship between service, trust, disability inclusion, and community.

The goal is to create a documentary that is joyful, honest, visually beautiful, and deeply human—a film that celebrates children with special needs while honoring the volunteers and families who help them experience the water safely and confidently.

About Waves of Impact

Waves of Impact provides adaptive surf experiences for individuals with special needs and wounded veterans, creating opportunities for participants and families to experience the ocean in a safe, supportive, and empowering environment.

At the Galveston Island event, volunteers work directly with children and families to make surfing accessible to participants with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injuries, and other disabilities. Every ride begins with trust, safety, and individualized support.

The result is more than recreation. It is connection. It is confidence. It is a reminder that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience joy, adventure, and belonging.

Many children with special needs are left out of experiences that other families take for granted. For their parents and caregivers, the challenge is not only finding activities, but finding people they can trust.

Waves of Impact creates a rare space where families can breathe, children can take risks safely, and volunteers can become part of a lasting support system.

The Ripple Effect matters because it shows what inclusion looks like when it is active, physical, joyful, and personal. It shows that service is not abstract. It happens when someone kneels in the sand, steadies a surfboard, learns a child’s needs, and says, “We’ve got you.”
